Bermuda; What a Pleasure!
An invitation from a old friend, Richard Joseph to join him for a week in Bermuda was too good to turn down so I found an AirBnB close to where he was staying in Somerset west end of the island and moved in the party. Years ago when I worked on cruise ships I had called into the Bermuda; even remember breaking down here once and spending a few unplanned days. I recalled there being something very special about this place and was anxious to explore and eat/sleep/smell this island…and maybe re live a few memories of days gone by. Made up of 181 islands, Bermuda is only 24 miles long and only a mile wide and home to just 60,000 people – at the same degrees north latitude (32) as Savannah, Georgia
And it all started with a shipwreck at what is now St. Georges in 1609 when 150 English travelers, led by Sir George Somers, on their way to the colony of Jamestown in Virginia were blown off course. Ever read Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’? It was inspired by these events.
The next year most of the party from the Sea Venture went on to Jamestown however 3 stayed behind. They were joined by additional settlers from England – and colonization had begun.
Everywhere you look there is beauty here. Like in Ireland with the shades of green, in Bermuda it is the most stunning shades of blue . Cars are limited to one per household therefore traffic is not bad; public transport is good and a popular way of getting around is by scooter. Car rentals are electric – and limited
