In September 2019 I made a quick decision to book a trip to Antarctica. One night I could not sleep I oddly enough thought to myself ‘God, if for some reason something happened to me and I could not travel anywhere far away again….what would be the one place I want to go.  So I booked a trip for that December.

Antarctica

Fournier Bay

Fournier Bay

The previous year I was overjoyed to have experienced a lifelong dream to see animals in Africa….then several months later some time in Australia (Adelaide & Tasmania, really) so it somehow seemed natural to bang out another A to have made all these three happen in one year.

I knew small ship was the only way for me to go…question was, which one. I’m single (widowed) so the cost of a single cabin was out – but I didn’t mind doing a share; figured whoever shared with me would be kinda/sorta like me and it would be fun to share the experience with someone. Who was I kidding. Sharing is the only way it is affordable as a single….so I was AOK with it. (my roommate turned out to be AWESOME…but apparently I snore).

The Antarctic

The Antarctic

This would be my third trip to the Antarctic; the first was when I was shore excursion manager onboard Silver Cloud, we chartered a 737 from Punta Arenas to fly over the peninsula – and only aisle and window seats were sold….and of course not the ones over the wings. The second time I was onboard an Oceania ship with my Oceanographer husband who was the Lecturer and Scientific Lead for the trip. This was a drive by, however – no landings. We did see penguins however they were black dots WAY in the distance.

Yep, I wanted to see Antarctica; to smell it, to taste it….to feel it, hear it and to above all touch it in any what that I could. So that’s what I did.
